Tennessee Trip

We made it through our first family vacation with Rylee!  Over Thanksgiving, we traveled to Tennessee to enjoy thanksgiving with my mom’s side of the family and to celebrate my Grandma’s 80th birthday.  I was a little nervous about this trip because it was Rylee’s first airplane ride, and once we got there, I wasn’t sure how well she was going to sleep.  We flew out of Kansas City (it was cheaper and there is a direct flight to Nashville), so Rylee got a nap in before we boarded the plane.  Now that she is walking, she does NOT like to be held for very long, but she did great on the way there.  She ate her lunch on the plane and we just had to keep rotating activities to keep her busy!
Rylee has never slept in a pack-and-play, but she did a lot better than I expected.  Her nap schedule was a little off, but by the time we left, she was back to her normal schedule for the most part.  She even surprised me by sleeping through the night most nights J  We were all in the same room so it was kind of funny to wake up to her peering over the pack-and-play and yelling at us to get up!  While we were there, we got a generation picture of my Grandma, my mom, me and Rylee.  Rylee also got to get her picture taken with all of my Grandma’s great grandchildren (a present to my Grandma for her birthday).  Rylee even got to experience her first limo ride.  We surprised my Grandma Thanksgiving night with a limo ride that took us to the Opryland Hotel.  I hadn’t been there since I was a kid, so it was fun to go see it again.  This is not your normal hotel either.  It has about 7 different wings and a “river” that runs through it!  You can even take a boat ride on the river.  Oh, and Santa was there!  John actually let Rylee go meet him this year.  Last year he wouldn’t let me take her to go see Santa because he thought all Santa’s were pedophiles.  Ironically, there was a news story last year after he told me this about a Santa who was actually a pedophile so I thought Rylee was never going to get to see him!  I guess this Santa looked harmless, although, Rylee did not want to have anything to do with him!  Oh well, maybe next year.
Unfortunately, the plane ride home wasn’t as smooth as the ride there.  We had to wake Rylee up early to catch the plane, so she was already tired.  She did pretty well for the first half, but she started to get really restless.  She literally screamed for the last 20 minutes.  She was crying so hard she gagged at one point and I thought we were going to actually have to use the barf bag.  THANK GOD that didn’t happen!  Once we landed, she was totally fine, so I am guessing her ears were bothering her (and she was overly tired).  Once we made it to our car, she passed out and slept the whole ride home.
I put up our Christmas tree when we got home and Rylee is actually doing really well with it.  She touches the ornaments occasionally, but for the most part, she leaves it alone.  I am getting more excited for Christmas to get here, I LOVE this time of year.   Now with Rylee here, it’s even better!!  I love that we get to play Santa J

We have a walker!!

Rylee took her first steps exactly on her 13 month birthday.  She has now mastered the skill during the past couple weeks.  Very rarely does she ever crawl now that she knows it is much faster to walk!  She is also slowly getting the hang of feeding herself.  If we put a piece of food on her fork, she won’t even let us feed her anymore.  SHE has to do it!  Another new “trick” she is fascinated with.  We are also finally getting her to drink her milk out of a sippy cup.  She would drink water out of it, but the second we tried to give her milk through the sippy cup, she wouldn’t drink anymore.  Silly girl!

Since John is home with Rylee during the day, he takes her to the “kid zone” at the gym.  She seems to love it.  There are a few older girls that are always there when she goes and they like to draw, so Rylee of course wants to do what they are doing.  We now have Rylee’s first artwork hanging on our fridge.  We are definitely going to have to invest in a few coloring books now.

And of course, HALLOWEEN!  Rylee was a cupcake and she was so stinkin cute.  I added a few jewels to the costume to spice it up.  She kept finding her costume laying around, so by the time we got to Halloween, she was excited to put it on.  She even kept bringing me her hat to put on!  We didn’t do the door to door trick-or-treating, but we did stop by my friend Andrea’s parents’ house and my dad’s house.  Next year will be a lot of fun going through the neighborhood with her.

Happy 1st Birthday Rylee-Roo-Bug!!

Rylee’s FIRST birthday party went GREAT!!  We had awesome food and a great turn out.  Rylee’s closet is now full again with super cute clothes and she got some new fun toys too.  I think her favorite one, though, was a set of rings.  She has already mastered getting each ring on the stick, now we have to try to get her to put them on in order J  Oh, and the cake of course!  Unfortunately, Rylee didn’t provide much entertainment.  Once she got her hands covered in frosting, she pretty much stopped and didn’t know what to do.  I gave her a small piece of cake to eat and she almost choked on it, so thankfully, she didn’t throw up while everyone was watching (because that’s usually what happens if she tries to swallow something before chewing it up)!!

On her actually birthday, John and I took her to the park to swing in the morning (she LOVES to swing), and then headed to the zoo in the afternoon.  It was a perfect day and there was hardly anybody there, so we got all the animals to ourselves.  We tried the cake thing again after dinner, and this time she did actually puke!!  She found a small piece of candy on her gigantic cupcake and gagged on it…at least it only happened in the presence of mom and dad J

Although it is kind of bittersweet for our baby to turn 1, I was thrilled that I could finally be done pumping.  I am so happy that I was able to give her breast milk for a whole year, but honestly, I did a happy dance the first time I was able to pour Rylee’s milk straight from a jug in the fridge!!  I am FREE from that dang pump…well at least until the next one comes.

Rylee now has eight teeth and I just bought her some apple banana toothpaste yesterday to keep her pearly whites clean.  I had just been brushing her teeth with a finger toothbrush, but she has kind of been getting stinky breath lately so toothpaste it is!  So far so good…

And lastly, Rylee has mastered saying, no no!  Well, it’s more like, naah naaaah…but she seems to be using in the right context, so now I have been trying to teach her to say “yes” J  She is usually yelling at our dog Maggie for not playing tug of war right (Maggie doesn’t let go when Rylee wants her too), so it’s hard not to laugh when she says it!

Hopefully it won’t be so long for me to post again, we have just had a busy month and a half!

P.S. I almost forgot, Rylee also got her first hair cut and she did so good!!

Rylee's New Skills

So Rylee has started to do a whole bunch of new things.  She has been pulling her self up on everything for probably the last month, but just in the past week or two, she is starting to also walk along stuff that she is holding on to.  I am guessing it won’t be long before she is walking on her own!  It is kind of bittersweet because I am excited to see her start to walk, but that also means she is growing up L

Just this past week, Rylee has also started to clap.  Every time I say, “Yay Rylee,” and clap, she just laughs and claps too!  She also claps when we play “patty cake.”  Yesterday when John was home with her, the Ellen show came on, and for those that watch it, Rylee started to dance when Ellen dances at the beginning of the show.  I guess she was in a crawling position and started to rock back and forth while watching the TV.  After she was done, she then clapped!  I wish I could have seen that!!  John and I have also been trying to teach her to wave, and just in the last couple of days, I think she is finally catching on.  When she is across the room at her, I try to always wave to her and say “hi Rylee.”  She FINALLY did it back to me J  John sent me a text today and said she waved at Maggie (her best doggie friend).  Speaking of Maggie, Rylee and Maggie get funnier everyday.  Rylee loves it when Maggie pounces around the house playing with her toys.  She thinks it is hilarious.  For awhile, Rylee would even crawl around the house with toys in her mouth like Maggie.  Our babysitter seriously thought Rylee got that from our dog.  And I STILL have to keep an eye out for Maggie’s toys because Rylee thinks she can chew on them too!

Lastly, Rylee decided yesterday that she no longer likes her oatmeal.  It is kind of her “staple” food for breakfast and lunch, so we are now in a scramble to come up with a new meal plan for her.  She seems to like toast, so that is going well.  John also scrambled up some egg yolks for her and she seemed to like those too!  Yes, John actually separated the eggs because the doctor told us she shouldn’t have egg whites until she is one.  Super daddy, let me tell you J  This weekend I think I might make some mini pancakes and freeze them.  She also seems to like yogurt, so now she is getting a variety for breakfast and lunch.

I am busy planning Rylee’s 1st birthday party and can’t wait, well sort of.  I can’t wait for the party, but I wish she could stay this age for just a little bit longer!

Here’s a little video of Rylee showing off how she can open and close doors and then clapping at herself:

Happy 4th of July

Other than Rylee having some kind of bug at the beginning of the weekend, we all had a great 4th! Friday evening Rylee had a temp of 103, but luckily it went down by the time she went to bed. She still had a little bit of a temp on Saturday, but not as high. Finally, on Sunday, she didn’t have a fever and seemed to be back to her normal goofy self.

We celebrated the 4th of July at some friends’ house and Rylee got to go swimming for the first time in an actual pool (not just the baby pool we have in the back yard). She loves baths and she loves her baby pool, but I wasn’t sure how she was going to do in an actual pool, but she LOVED it! We bought her a little floaty, and once she got in that thing, she just started kicking away – enough to even move through the water a little! Her little legs wouldn’t stop :) Rylee also did really good with the fireworks, they didn’t scare her a bit. She just watched all the bright colors in the sky. After we got home, I never thought she would go to sleep with all the noise going on outside, but the swimming must have worn her out because she slept right through everything.

Rylee also got her first kiss this weekend from her friend Hunter – right smack on the lips even! John couldn’t get mad because it was too cute, but he might have to watch out for that little boy in a couple of years.

Let’s see, what else…Rylee now has 6 teeth! The latest ones have definitely been the worst yet, which may have caused part of the problem with the fever she had. She is now saying momma and dadda all the time and I think she even tries to say Maggie! I am already starting to plan for her 1st birthday party and ordered some supplies from Oriental Trading Co. I actually bought her 1st birthday outfit probably 4 months ago! We are going with a cupcake theme, which stems from her outfit, so hopefully it turns out cute.

Here are a few pics from our 4th celebration:

BuSy MeMoRiAl DaY WeEkEnD!!

Let’s see where to begin…I actually got to catch up on Rylee's scrapbook on Saturday afternoon.  I honestly can't believe I am up to date on that thing! Saturday night we went over to some friend’s of ours house for a bbq.  We had yummy food and got to play my favorite game, Catch Phrase of course!  I think that last phrase just aged me by about 20 years, I now enjoy playing games and going to bed by 11:30pm on the weekends :)  Hey, at least we were all drinking margaritas and playing Catch Phrase!  Sunday night we invited ourselves over to my dad’s house for a fish fry.  He was frying up some fish for friends and I happened to call earlier in the day and found out about it!  I wasn’t going to pass up another great meal.  Again, though, we were home by about 10pm so we could get Rylee to bed (and I wasn’t far behind her).  And then we were invited to another bbq Monday afternoon, so we got to end the weekend with some more great food!  Rylee and I laid in the grass on a blanket and watched John and his friends play bean bags.  Rylee wasn’t so sure of the grass, which made it easy on me because she wouldn’t leave the blanket and I didn’t have to chase her.  She would get to the very edge of the blanket and touch the grass, but she didn’t dare to crawl into it!

I think I say this in every post, but Rylee is growing so stinkin fast!  She is almost 9 months now!  She now has 3 teeth, the two bottom ones and one of the top ones.  Her other top tooth should be poking through any day, so for now, she looks kind of silly with her one tooth on top (she is cute no matter what though even if she has only one goofy tooth on top)!  She still isn’t really crawling yet (still arming crawling everywhere).  She can get in the crawling position and will move on all fours every once in a while, but when she really wants to get somewhere, she just army crawls.  She can however get into a push-up/plank position pretty easily, don’t ask me where she learned to do that!  She is going to have some strong shoulders and abs pretty soon, though, if she keeps it up. She is also starting to pull herself up.  Whenever I am eating in the living room, I usually eat on the floor (so I can play and eat at the same time:) and she crawls over to me, pulls herself up on my arm, and then just stares at me until I give her a bite!  Between her and Maggie begging, I don’t know what I am going to do with the two of them.

Lastly, HAPPY 3rd ANNIVERSARY to John and I today!  I love that we always get to have a long weekend to celebrate our anniversary.  John took the night off of work, so I can’t wait to get home from work and eat another great meal and hang out with my little family!

Army Crawling Machine and HAPPY EASTER!

Happy 7 Months to Rylee!!  Her 7 month birthday was actually last week, but better late than never, right?  Man how time flies.  It didn’t seem like Rylee was getting that old until she hit 6 months, and now 7 months?!?!?  Sometimes I wish I could hit a pause button so I can enjoy her at this age just a little bit longer.  She does the funniest things and is just so darn cuddly.  She doesn’t giggle often, but when she does, it melts my heart and makes me laugh every time.

This past week, she can now sit up on her own AND she is on the move.  She has been able to “scoot” for probably the last month or so, but she is all over the place.  She is doing a full blown army crawl now.  If she see’s something she wants, she is determined to get it.  Unfortunately, it is usually not her own toys.  Her three favorite items are the remote, my phone, and….Maggie’s (our dog) rubber bone.  I can't believe I am admitting this, but I have now caught her twice with Maggie’s rubber bone, chewing on it nonetheless – GROSS, I know (I hope it’s true that dogs have cleaner mouths than humans)!  I swear I will throw the darn thing out of reach, but while I am not looking, Maggie will go get it and bring it within Rylee’s reach.  I have even seen Maggie try to toss Rylee her toys hoping that Rylee will play back.  Those two are funny to watch because they both want to play with each other, but with completely different intentions!  I have now started to keep a really close eye on the two of them.  Well, here is a little video of Rylee going after the remote:

Fun Day at the Zoo

This past weekend, Rylee got to experience the Henry Doorly Zoo for the first time and I think she loved it!  I don’t think she knew what she was looking at when the animals were far away, but when we got to the aquarium, she couldn’t stop looking around at everything swimming by.  She is also a “people watcher,” so I think she enjoyed just being outside and taking in the new surroundings.  I couldn’t believe how much had changed since the last time I was there (at least 5 years ago).  I am going to grab a map next time so we are not just wondering around!  It was also fun to take her to a place that I also got to experience when I was little.  I am usually about a month behind on getting pictures uploaded from my camera, but I WILL get pictures up from our first zoo adventure eventually!

This last week I came across a blog that has really made me appreciate everything I have in life and how blessed I am to have a healthy baby.  If you want to see what I am talking about here is the link:  The blog is written by a mom who has a little girl with a bone disease.  The mom actually started the blog when she was still pregnant and was told that her baby would probably pass away shortly after birth, if she even made it that far.  Well, the docs misdiagnosed the baby and she is now 1 ½ years old.  The little girl is just so darn cute and it breaks my heart that she has had to go through so much pain at such a young age.  In her short 1 ½ years of life, she has probably already gone through more than what most people endure in a lifetime.  However, even through all of her medical issues, she seems to be such a happy baby.  I actually found myself tearing up when I was reading through the blog because I could not imagine having to go through that with Rylee.  Heck, I bawled when Rylee had to get her first shots!  Although I have never met this little girl, she has definitely taught me to enjoy each and every day (the good AND the bad ones) to its fullest!

I also want to say that I am very proud of this mom that she continued with her pregnancy and knew that aborting her baby wasn’t even an option!  I think she said in her blog that the overwhelming majority of women terminate their pregnancies when they find out their babies have a life threatening disease or have some kind of abnormality.  This is proof that we need to leave life and death up to God!

Baby Food

We introduced solids to Rylee when she was about 5 months (rice cereal at first and then veggies a week later), and being that it is ridiculously cheaper to make our own baby food, I thought I would give it a try.  I’m sure it is even healthier to buy fresh veggies, but I just buy frozen bags, cook then on the stove, and then blend them up.  For veggies, I have made carrots, green beans, and peas.  For fruits, I have made apples, bananas, peaches, and pears.  Apples are about the easiest, I bought applesause (no sugar added), and then I blended it a little more, which probably wasn’t necessary, but oh well!  I wasn’t sure if fresh bananas would get yucky if I froze them, but they actually kept really well (I just make small batches so they get used pretty quick).  With everything else I have made, I just add a little water if the consistency is too thick, but for the bananas, I added a little breast milk (found a recipe online to do this).  Now for the peaches and pears…so I searched for the canned peaches and pears that were packed in water and also indicated that there was no sugar added.  I thought I was good to go, so in the blender they went.  After feeding Rylee peaches for a couple days, I took a second look at a can I hadn’t used yet, and in fine print, it said it had artificial sweetener in it, ugh!  I’m assuming that is probably not the best for babies, so I tossed the peaches and pears I had made and bought new peaches and pears that are packed in 100% fruit juice.

If anybody reading this ever wants to attempt to make baby food, it is honestly the easiest thing ever.  Before trying it, I thought there is no way I am going to have time to do this, but it is sooooo easy.  I don’t have a food processor, so I just stick the well cooked veggies or fruit in the blender.  Once I get the consistency that I want, I just pour the baby food into ice cube trays and freeze it.  After the food is frozen, I put each “ice cube” into the really small ziplock bags, and then I put each type of food into big freezer bags.  Each ice cube (at least the ice cube trays that I have) are about a tablespoon, so it makes it really easy to measure how much food we give Rylee.

Just a quick side note, I am also still breast feeding, well bottle feeding breast milk is probably the more accurate way to say it.  I am not sure why, but I have yet to give Rylee any formula, and really don’t ever want to give it to her.  I don’t think formula is bad, but I have this idea stuck in my head that my milk has to be much better for her, so why in the heck would I give her any formula if I don’t have to.  It’s almost like I would feel guilty giving her something that I think isn’t as good.  With that said, I am planning on giving her breast milk until she turns one.  And honestly, I have been burning through so many calories by breast feeding, I actually weigh less than what I did before I was pregnant.  So being that I don’t seem to have as much time to exercise as I did before, breast feeding will also keep me “in shape” for swim suit season!!  Oh, and another added perk, my “cycle” hasn’t started yet because of breast feeding, so it has been since December of 2009 that my monthly friend as appeared.  Definitely can’t complain about that!!

HELLO Again!!

It’s been 6 months since I have posted anything, so I thought I might give it a try again!  I am not promising that there will be a lot of posts like I did through my pregnancy with Rylee, but we will see how it goes (for some reason I don’t seem to have as much time as I used to :)

Let’s see, my life in a nutshell for the past 6 months:  Rylee is now 6 months old!  Man how time flies.  She is getting her two bottom teeth and is rolling all over the place.  John and I think she is going to be crawling in no time.  If you put something just out of her reach, she is starting to “scoot” to get it.  If she is on her belly, she kind of does crawling motions (it looks like she is swimming).  She started baby food about a month ago and loves it.  We made it through all of the vegetables and we are now introducing her to fruits.  Did I mention I LOVE being a momma!  John and I both agree that no matter how bad of a day we are having, just one glance at Rylee will brighten our day and put a smile on our face.  I am obviously back to work – boo!  That was a very hard transition after my maternity leave, but I made it through.  I actually had 8 full weeks off, and then another 4 weeks part-time, so the part-time helped with the transition.  John works in the evening, so Rylee only goes to the babysitter twice a week for a couple hours.  We actually really like our babysitter, but we are glad Rylee gets to be at home most of the time.

Well, I think that about sums it up!  Hopefully Rylee isn’t a year old by the time I get around to posting again!
