Baby Food

We introduced solids to Rylee when she was about 5 months (rice cereal at first and then veggies a week later), and being that it is ridiculously cheaper to make our own baby food, I thought I would give it a try.  I’m sure it is even healthier to buy fresh veggies, but I just buy frozen bags, cook then on the stove, and then blend them up.  For veggies, I have made carrots, green beans, and peas.  For fruits, I have made apples, bananas, peaches, and pears.  Apples are about the easiest, I bought applesause (no sugar added), and then I blended it a little more, which probably wasn’t necessary, but oh well!  I wasn’t sure if fresh bananas would get yucky if I froze them, but they actually kept really well (I just make small batches so they get used pretty quick).  With everything else I have made, I just add a little water if the consistency is too thick, but for the bananas, I added a little breast milk (found a recipe online to do this).  Now for the peaches and pears…so I searched for the canned peaches and pears that were packed in water and also indicated that there was no sugar added.  I thought I was good to go, so in the blender they went.  After feeding Rylee peaches for a couple days, I took a second look at a can I hadn’t used yet, and in fine print, it said it had artificial sweetener in it, ugh!  I’m assuming that is probably not the best for babies, so I tossed the peaches and pears I had made and bought new peaches and pears that are packed in 100% fruit juice.

If anybody reading this ever wants to attempt to make baby food, it is honestly the easiest thing ever.  Before trying it, I thought there is no way I am going to have time to do this, but it is sooooo easy.  I don’t have a food processor, so I just stick the well cooked veggies or fruit in the blender.  Once I get the consistency that I want, I just pour the baby food into ice cube trays and freeze it.  After the food is frozen, I put each “ice cube” into the really small ziplock bags, and then I put each type of food into big freezer bags.  Each ice cube (at least the ice cube trays that I have) are about a tablespoon, so it makes it really easy to measure how much food we give Rylee.

Just a quick side note, I am also still breast feeding, well bottle feeding breast milk is probably the more accurate way to say it.  I am not sure why, but I have yet to give Rylee any formula, and really don’t ever want to give it to her.  I don’t think formula is bad, but I have this idea stuck in my head that my milk has to be much better for her, so why in the heck would I give her any formula if I don’t have to.  It’s almost like I would feel guilty giving her something that I think isn’t as good.  With that said, I am planning on giving her breast milk until she turns one.  And honestly, I have been burning through so many calories by breast feeding, I actually weigh less than what I did before I was pregnant.  So being that I don’t seem to have as much time to exercise as I did before, breast feeding will also keep me “in shape” for swim suit season!!  Oh, and another added perk, my “cycle” hasn’t started yet because of breast feeding, so it has been since December of 2009 that my monthly friend as appeared.  Definitely can’t complain about that!!

HELLO Again!!

It’s been 6 months since I have posted anything, so I thought I might give it a try again!  I am not promising that there will be a lot of posts like I did through my pregnancy with Rylee, but we will see how it goes (for some reason I don’t seem to have as much time as I used to :)

Let’s see, my life in a nutshell for the past 6 months:  Rylee is now 6 months old!  Man how time flies.  She is getting her two bottom teeth and is rolling all over the place.  John and I think she is going to be crawling in no time.  If you put something just out of her reach, she is starting to “scoot” to get it.  If she is on her belly, she kind of does crawling motions (it looks like she is swimming).  She started baby food about a month ago and loves it.  We made it through all of the vegetables and we are now introducing her to fruits.  Did I mention I LOVE being a momma!  John and I both agree that no matter how bad of a day we are having, just one glance at Rylee will brighten our day and put a smile on our face.  I am obviously back to work – boo!  That was a very hard transition after my maternity leave, but I made it through.  I actually had 8 full weeks off, and then another 4 weeks part-time, so the part-time helped with the transition.  John works in the evening, so Rylee only goes to the babysitter twice a week for a couple hours.  We actually really like our babysitter, but we are glad Rylee gets to be at home most of the time.

Well, I think that about sums it up!  Hopefully Rylee isn’t a year old by the time I get around to posting again!
